Menstruation is a natural and normal part of a woman’s reproductive cycle. I got my period when I was starting 7th grade and I remember absolutely freaking out. Of course I knew what periods where from health class, but I didn’t have pads or anyone to go to to ask questions.

This topic is very important for me and I wanted to share information and tips about taking care of yourself during menstruation for anyone who doesn’t have a maternal influence.

First off, what is a period?

A period, also known as menstruation, is a natural part of the female reproductive cycle. It occurs when the lining of the uterus (endometrium) sheds and exits the body through the vagina. This process typically happens once a month and lasts for about 3 to 7 days. The menstrual cycle usually spans about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person, ranging from 21 to 35 days.

what products do I need?

There are various menstrual products available, including sanitary pads, tampons, menstrual cups, and period panties. Choose the product that suits your comfort and lifestyle. I personally recommend pads if you are on the younger side since they are easier to use. There are also different kinds of pads and tampons depending on how much you bleed (your flow).

How to handle the pain?

Many women experience menstrual cramps or discomfort during their periods. Over-the-counter pain relievers, heat therapy (hot water bottle or heating pad), and gentle exercise can help alleviate pain.

Period hygiene?

Change your menstrual products regularly (every 4-8 hours) to maintain hygiene and prevent leaks and odor. Wash your hands before and after handling menstrual products.

How do I know when it’s coming?

You can keep track of your menstrual cycle using a period tracker app or calendar. Tracking helps predict your next period, monitor cycle irregularities, and track symptoms like mood changes or cramps.

Extra tips:

  • If you have cramps, drink tea or hot water with ginger, lemon and honey. 🍯
  • Take hot baths! many people think its gross to bathe while you are on your period, but the bleeding actually stops while in water. And it helps a lot with cramps.
  • take a nap.
  • Eat chocolate, it always helps 🍫
  • watch romance movies, trust me.
  • Search for stretches on tiktok that help with cramps.

Remember, periods are a natural part of life, and managing them gets easier with time and practice. Don’t hesitate to reach out for help or advice, and take good care of yourself during your menstrual cycle. You’ve got this! πŸ’ͺπŸ’–
